Snapdragon Consulting were appointed by Bywaters to provide a community consultation and political engagement programme to support the plans to bring forward a redevelopment of their Gateway Road, Leyton in the London Borough of Waltham Forest.
The application was for up to 730 units, provision for a new two form entry primary school on site, and 4,500 sqm of new commercial space, designed for SMEs and local entrepreneurs. A building of 16 storeys was included as part of the plan, as well as extensive landscaping and public realm improvements.
The Snapdragon Consulting team developed a bespoke community consultation and political engagement programme to support the application as it came through the pre-application and post-submission process. This included a two day public exhibition that was attended by local residents and a number of senior politicians including the Leader of the Council and the Cabinet Member for Housing.
In parallel, the project team met with the local ward councillors as well as community stakeholders, such as Leyton Orient Football Club, in order to outline the scheme in further detail and field questions. In total almost 20 separate stakeholder meetings were held. Briefings were also distributed to all planning committee members in advance of the committee meeting.
The application was unanimously approved by Waltham Forest Planning Committee in November 2016 and enjoyed the support of a number of local residents, one of whom spoke in support of the application on the night, and the ward councillor in Leyton. The successful resolution for consent was then covered in Estates Gazette, Planning Magazine, and the Waltham Forest Guardian.
